The schools Porto Novo Basket, from Santo Antão, and Djarmai Basket ‘Edy Tavares’, from the island of Maio, signed, Saturday, September 2nd, in Porto Novo, a protocol aimed at the promotion and massification of basketball in Cape Verde. One of the objectives of this initiative is the creation of a network of basketball initiation schools in the country.
The head of the Djarmai Basket ‘Edy Tavares’ school, Fernando Frederico, explained that this protocol, signed as part of an exchange with the Porto Novo Basket school, falls within the scope of a strategy of the two sports associations, aiming to promote in Cape Verde the creation of a network of basketball schools.
The massification of basketball practice on the islands of Santo Antão and Maio is another purpose of a cooperation protocol, within the scope of which it is foreseen the creation of a basketball campus in Santo Antão with the presence of the international Edy Tavares.
Sports exchanges and exchange of experiences
In addition to “joining efforts with a view to the massification of basketball” through training, internal competitions and the promotion of street basketball on these two islands, the schools of Porto Novo Basket and Djarmai Basket Edy Tavares are also committed, within the scope of the protocol , carry out sporting exchanges and exchange experiences.
The two schools that were in the last weekend on exchange in the city of Porto Novo marked by the holding of a game between the under-18 teams of Porto Novo Basket and Djarmai Basket Edy Tavares, also promise to “join efforts” in the mobilization of support and partners “on behalf of their schools”.
The protocol also foresees the promotion of actions of a social nature by the two schools in favor of children and young people from poor families and dissemination of the modality among the communities.
Porto Novo Basket: 22 years dedicated to basketball
It should be remembered that the Porto Novo Basket team is the current regional champion of Santo Antão in senior men’s basketball and also won the opening tournament in that category.
Founded in 2001, Porto Novo Basket is a club from Santo Antão dedicated exclusively to basketball. Since 2009, it has a school with several dozen athletes in the beginner and junior levels (7 to 12 years old) and mini-basketball (13 to 18 years old).
The club has already won several regional championships at senior and junior levels, with trophies achieved at national level also worth mentioning.
Djarmai Basket Edy Tavares School: Cultivating practice from childhood
The Djarmai Basket Edy Tavares school was created in 2021 by Maense and Cape Verdean international, Edy Tavares, who plays for Real Madrid in Spain.
“The intention is for people to get used to playing basketball and gain a love for the sport. It is necessary to cultivate the practice from childhood, so that the kids can decide if they want to make sport their life, whether in basketball or in other modalities”, said Edy Tavares when the school was created.
Since then, the Djarmai Basket Edy Tavares school has become a national reference, both through participation in the most varied competitions and in the promotion of exchange programs in different parts of Cape Verde.
