Africa-Press – Cape verde. The city council of Porto Novo recognized, on Saturday, the “exemplary work and dedication” of the Porto Novo Volunteer Fire Department, “which even voluntarily dedicates its time to saving lives” in this municipality.
The municipality took advantage of the International Firefighter’s Day, marked on May 4th, to remember the “importance and irreplaceable role” of volunteer firefighters in the system of protecting and helping populations in the various tasks they perform.
“We acknowledge the exemplary work and dedication of the firefighters to our municipality who, even voluntarily, dedicate their time to saving lives. Being a firefighter means being an extremely benevolent human. It’s giving up your family so that others can be saved. It is an act worthy of love and greatness”, acknowledged the municipality.
The Porto Novo council, in a message addressed to the firefighters, praised the “excellent work” that the peacekeepers are providing to the people of Porto Novo, considering that the corporation, which is around 20 years old, is currently “more and better prepared” to serve populations.
However, the Porto Novo Fire Department has been asking for the professionalization of at least one group of firefighters and the creation of a 24-hour picket service so that the institution can respond, in a timely manner, to citizens’ requests.
The municipality says it recognizes the need to provide this municipality with a professional fire brigade, but admitted difficulties in taking this measure due to the municipality’s “high salary bill”.
In the year 2024, the city council of Porto Novo promises to improve working conditions and strengthen the technical capacity of the Porto Novo Fire Department, intending to invest, for this purpose, more than three thousand contos.
