Africa-Press – Cape verde. The EcoRaízes project, promoted by the Association for the Defense of Heritage in Mértola, Portugal, is developing an environmental education program in schools on the island of Santo Antão, Inforpress learned this Sunday.
A note from this project explains that the environmental education program in schools has allowed children to learn about the importance of protecting the environment and biodiversity on the island of Santo Antão, especially in protected areas.
EcoRaízes is a project that aims to support and strengthen civil society as a promoter of sustainable tourism in the protected areas of Santo Antão and São Nicolau, as a factor in generating income for local communities.
It also aims to contribute, in the long term, to environmental sustainability and to improving living conditions in Cape Verde, the note also states, according to which, as part of the program, students have been planting tree seedlings, assuming “a commitment to caring for the environment and endemic species”.
São Nicolau is another island that has benefited from this project, co-financed by the European Union and Portuguese cooperation through Camões IP.
Other partners include the municipal councils of Santo Antão and São Nicolau, the Association of Tour Operators of São Nicolau, the Association of Women of the Eastern Plateau of Santo Antão and the Higher Institute of Economic and Business Sciences.
