Africa-Press – Cape verde. Farmers’ associations in the different agricultural valleys in the municipality of Porto Novo, in Santo Antão, insisted today on the start of the underground water prospecting program in the municipality, announced in 2022 by the Government.
This is the case of the Chã de Norte Farmers Association, which has once again asked for another borehole to be built in that area, as the one that has existed there since 2015 can no longer meet the needs of more than 50 farmers.
The president of the Farmers’ Association in Morro Cavalo, in Ribeira da Cruz, also told Inforpress that the class has been asking the Government to build a hole in this agricultural perimeter to meet the demand of around 40 local farmers.
Likewise, in Alto Mira, the local farmers’ association, recalled its leader Idarlino Fortes, has been insisting on the execution of a borehole in the third village of this agricultural valley, where the scarcity of water for irrigation “is already notorious”.
Likewise, in Ribeira das Patas, the largest agricultural valley in the municipality of Porto Novo, the local farmers’ association calls for the mobilization of groundwater to avoid “the decline” of agriculture in the area.
The farmers’ representative, Arlindo Delgado, told Inforpress that prospecting for underground water for agriculture in the locality is considered “a priority” for farmers, taking into account the lack of water.
Porto Novo, according to the Government’s announcement, will be included, within the scope of the drilling program, with ten holes.
