Porto Novo: Farmers with “huge losses” of products due to “difficulties in distribution” – producers

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Farmers in isolated areas of the Alto Mira valley, Porto Novo and Santo Antão continue to experience “significant losses” of their produce due to “difficulties in transporting them”, the farmers themselves told Inforpress.

The farmers said that the lack of access roads to the interior of the Alto Mira valley, more specifically to Faial and Dominguinhas, is compromising agricultural activity in these areas, as farmers are unable to transport their surplus produce, which ends up being lost locally.

The Farmers’ Association in Alto Mira confirmed to Inforpress that producers in Faial and Dominguinhas have been experiencing “significant losses” of produce as they are unable to transport it to the market.

The leader of this association, Idarlino Fortes, confirmed that there have been many product losses in these two locations, because farmers have no way of transporting their surplus produce.

The president of the Dominguinhas Development Association, Ilaurindo Baptista, explained that some farmers are able to transport some products using animals (donkeys and mules), but when they reach the market they are no longer of good enough quality to be consumed.

Some farmers in these areas told Inforpress that they have been “producing for nothing”, since they are unable to sell their products, which have ended up being lost.

The government recently announced that it intends to carry out studies with a view to drawing up a project to build an access road to Dominguinhas, and has already launched a tender for these studies.
