Porto Novo: "Investments in the North Planalto in the areas of water and energy around 140 thousand contos", says mayor

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Investments made in recent years in Planalto Norte, in the interior of the municipality of Porto Novo, in Santo Antão, in the areas of energy and water, are around 140 thousand contos, informed the mayor of Porto Novo, Aníbal Fonseca.

Aníbal Fonseca, who spoke this Monday night at the inauguration of the electric light in Bolona, in the Northern Plateau, said that, with this project, this plateau has already received more than 50 thousand contos in investments in electrical energy.

In the field of water, in which the precious liquid was pumped using solar energy, more than 90 thousand contos were invested, explained this mayor, for whom the projects carried out benefit around 400 people.

With the electrification of Bolona, inaugurated on Monday by the Minister of Energy, Alexandre Monteiro, the North Plateau was completely covered with electrical energy supplied through photovoltaic energy production units.

However, in the Chã de Feijoal area, one of the communities in the Planalto Norte, the inhabitants are currently facing difficulties in supplying electricity, but Alexandre Monteiro announced that the Government, within the scope of Luxembourg cooperation, will invest in strengthening micro -central of this location.

For the Porto-Novense mayor, with electricity, the conditions have been created for inhabitants to develop economic activities in the Planalto Norte, where livestock farming is the main economic activity.

Aníbal Fonseca confirmed that the arrival of electricity in Bolona will allow the reactivation of the local cheese factory, which has been closed since 2011.

The North Plateau of Porto Novo is seen as “an example in Cape Verde” in terms of energy transition, as it is a portion of the territory where electrical energy is produced through photovoltaic units.

This plateau has three photovoltaic energy production plants and seven water pumping stations based on solar energy, and is therefore considered by environmentalists to be “a model area” in terms of energy transition in Cape Verde.

Engineer Ary Lopes, from the Association for the Defense of the Heritage of Mértola, Portugal, a partner in the implementation of water and energy projects in Planalto Norte, considers that this plateau, in these two areas, is “a source of pride” for the municipality of Porto Novo and “an example” at the level of the archipelago.

In fact, Porto Novo was the first municipality in the country to have, in 2012, a community electrified 100 percent (%) with renewable energy (Monte Trigo) and the municipality where all water production systems in rural communities operate based on solar energy.

The village of Monte Trigo will once again receive investments to reinforce the energy production unit, according to an announcement made by the minister responsible for this sector, Alexandre Monteiro, visiting Santo Antão on Monday.
