Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAA) in the municipality of Porto Novo, in Santo Antão, has the agricultural campaign for 2022 underway, focusing on the problem of pests in rain-fed agriculture.
The Delegate of the Ministry, Joel Barros, told Inforpress that the preparation of the agricultural campaign began now in early May, with the issue of pests on the agenda, namely in rain-fed agriculture, focusing on the pest of locusts.
Regarding the complaint by the MP from the Movement for Democracy (MpD), Damião Medina, about the existence of pest in tomato crop in the lower area of Porto Novo (Ribeira Fria, Ribeira dos Bodes, Casa do Meio and peripheral area of the city) Joel Barros explained that the MAA has been providing technical assistance to farmers, to whom is the responsibility to combat this kind of pest.
Moreover, for the irrigation sector, the MAA’s action focuses on technical assistance to farmers, he explained, adding that, in the concrete case of the tomato crop in Ribeira dos Bodes and Ribeira Fria, the technicians have provided assistance to producers, who have been using “traps” in the fight against the pest.
