Porto Novo: Mayor admits that debts with APN have caused “bleeding” of municipal finances

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of Porto Novo City Council admitted on Wednesday, 6th, that the debts owed to the company Águas do Porto Novo (APN), related to the supply of drinking water, have caused “a drain” on the municipality’s finances.

According to Aníbal Fonseca, these are debts “accumulated for over 15 years” with this desalinated water production company, which have created, he warned, “a major financial problem” for the municipality, which has only been able to pay “half” in these years. of the service provided by APN.

The mayor did not provide figures, but Inforpress knows that, every month, there is a deficit that exceeds two thousand contos, with the supply of water to the Autonomous Water Service of Porto Novo, by the APN, with the debt being owed to this company around 200 thousand contos.

The city council, even so, has been reducing debts, having already made “more than 100 thousand contos” available for this purpose, causing “a financial drain” to the municipality, warned the mayor.

Despite all this, said Aníbal Fonseca, the Porto Novo City Council has relied on the APN, recognizing that “it would not be just any company” that for more than 16 years would be supplying its goods and receiving “only half” of the value.

However, the debts of the Porto-Novense city council with the APN may be resolved and resolved within the framework of the creation of the intermunicipal company Águas de Santo Antão, whose constitutive assembly took place on Wednesday, 6th.

Every month, there is a commercial and technical deficit in the order of two thousand contos, borne by the municipality which, according to Aníbal Fonseca, “should not be responsible for this”, hence defending the subsidization, by the Government, of water for consumption in the city of Porto Novo, similar to what happens in other municipalities in the country.
