Porto Novo: Minister of Tourism urges farmers to take advantage of the tourist market in Sal and Boa Vista

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Tourism and Transport urged, Friday night, in the city of Porto Novo, farmers on the island of Santo Antão to take advantage of the tourist market on the islands of Sal and Boa Vista.

Carlos Santos, who was speaking at the opening of the Santo Antão agricultural and livestock fair, appealed to Santanton farmers to take advantage of the business opportunity that this tourist market offers, informing that, per year, hotels in Sal and Boa Vista consume 100 million euros only in agricultural products.

“I appeal to farmers to organize themselves with support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the city council and look for the tourist market in Sal and Boa Vista”, highlighted the Minister of Tourism, praising the investment that the Government is making to do in the installation of the agricultural products treatment center in Santo Antão, “precisely”, to facilitate the flow of agricultural surpluses.

Carlos Santos also highlighted the measures that the Government has been taking with a view to supporting agricultural producers, referring, among others, to the drip irrigation and greenhouse subsidy programs, which have allowed farmers to modernize their activity.

The minister also spoke of a program financed within the scope of cooperation with Hungary, which consists of increasing the agricultural area in the country, and which includes the municipality of Porto Novo, with the creation of an agricultural perimeter of around 100 hectares.

For his part, the mayor of Porto Novo referred to the importance of the Santo Antão agricultural and livestock fair, which is now in its eighteenth edition, and which already represents “an extraordinary brand” of the São João festivities in this municipality.

In addition to being “a large exhibition” of agricultural, livestock and artisanal products, the fair also constitutes “a great display of gastronomy and culture” from Santos, explained Aníbal Fonseca.

According to the organization’s forecast, thousands of people are expected to visit the Santo Antão agricultural and livestock fair until Sunday, which has around 60 exhibitors.

This exhibition of agricultural products and crafts from Santo Antão, according to the organization, has as one of its purposes the promotion and dissemination of activities that are associated with the rural world (agriculture and livestock) and the island’s crafts.
