Porto Novo: Relatives ask for speed of justice in alleged case of medical negligence

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The relatives of Antónia da Cruz, who died four years ago, in São Vicente, ask for speed of justice in responding to an alleged case of medical negligence. Despite the pressure, they say they have not been informed about the progress of the process, which has left the family apprehensive.

O caso remonta a Agosto de 2018, quando Antónia da Cruz procurou os serviços médicos do centro de saúde do Porto Novo, em Santo Antão, com queixas de dor na coxa direita, com irradiação para o membro inferior do mesmo lado.

As the victim’s son, Kleiton Djon, tells A NAÇÃO, the mother was treated and administered an ampoule of intravenous Tramadol, which, as she says, started a cardiorespiratory arrest minutes later.

“They gave the injection without knowing if there were any contraindications. Already medicated, my mother was worse than she was, feeling bad with vomiting and convulsions”, says Kleiton Djon.

Dissatisfied with the outcome of the case, the family members requested an autopsy to determine the cause of death of Antónia da Cruz, aged 39. As stated in the document, which A NAÇÃO had access to, the victim died of respiratory depression after administration of intravenous Tramadol and acute edema in the lung.

With the results of the autopsy in hand, the family members filed a criminal complaint with the São Vicente District Court in September 2018 against the doctor and nurse who treated Antónia da Cruz in Porto Novo and against another doctor. , in São Vicente, who was working under the Hospital’s on-call regime, which would not have answered the phone to help the victim in question.

“Slow of Justice”

However, four years after what happened, the family members complain about the lack of information and the slowness of justice in ending the case.

“We want justice. If there was a medical error, we want those responsible to be held accountable. However, the process has taken time and there is no information. One of the names mentioned in the process, the doctor in São Vicente, traveled to Cuba and, according to the Court, this has delayed things, but there is no point in delaying a process because one of the names is not in the country”, says Kleiton Djon with indignation. .

Antónia da Cruz, 39, left five children, one of whom is a minor and family members are asking for justice to be speeded up because, as they say, they will not rest until the culprits are punished.
