Porto Novo/São João: Parish priest appeals to the faithful that the municipality remains without cases so there can be a pilgrimage

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The parish priest of Porto Novo, Santo Antão, today appealed to citizens to continue to comply with the guidelines of the health authorities against covid-19 so that, this year, the pilgrimage of the image of the patron saint can be resumed in traditional ways.

“This year, we can pick up São João on foot if people continue to comply with the recommendations of the health authorities and prevent covid-19”, appealed Father José Pires, during Easter celebrations, asking the faithful to continue to make Porto Novo remain without active cases. Porto Novo has no positive case of covid-19 at this time, according to the epidemiological bulletin of the Ministry of Health.

If this continues, the pilgrimage of the image of São João between Ribeira das Patas and the city of Porto Novo, which usually takes place in June, will be carried out in the traditional format, that is, on foot, with the image of the saint being carried on the shoulders of the faithful, guaranteed José Pires.

Last week, the same had already assured Inforpress that the pilgrimage, which in the last two years was conditioned by the restrictions imposed by the covid-19, can be resumed, this year, in the usual way.

It is recalled that since 2020, the pilgrimage, which brings together “thousands of people”, has been suspended, but in 2021 the image of São João was brought by car to the city of Porto Novo, which generated some controversy among the people of Porto Novo. .

For 2022, the pilgrimage, which marks the high point of the religious program of the feasts of São João in Porto Novo, should take place in the usual way, that is, with the transport of the image on the shoulders of the faithful, admitted the parish priest, according to which “ everything will depend on the evolution of sanitary conditions” in this municipality.
