Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Director of Energy and Geology of Portugal, Jerónimo Cunha, considered today, in the city of Praia, that Cape Verde, despite its smallness in the eyes of Africa, will be an example for the energy transition on the continent and in the world.

Jerónimo Cunha, who was speaking to the press during the Cabo Verde – Portugal workshop on energy management and promoting energy efficiency, said that this opportunity can be taken advantage of, not only for Cape Verde to assert itself on climate issues, but also, an opportunity for the archipelago in terms of economic issues.

“Portugal looks at the energy transition as an economic opportunity. If we can produce our own energy with our resources, we will be more competitive and I think Cape Verde aspires to this, and this is what we want to contribute and help Cape Verde in this sense”, she asserted.

In this sense, he said that Portugal wants to share its experience with the archipelago in terms of energy consumers, “due to their nature as large consumers who deserve a different approach” on issues of energy efficiency and renewable energy.

“Portugal already has this statute enshrined in its law, we already have some experiences and we want to effectively share it with our Cape Verdean colleagues, so that they can implement strategies and policies in this sense”, he said, considering that the large consumers of Energy, by its nature, must have different mechanisms than normal energy consumers.

The director of Industry, Commerce and Energy of Cape Verde, Rito Évora, praised the existing cooperation protocol between the two counterpart institutions, claiming that it includes an important aspect aimed at promoting the strategic axis of energy efficiency, as one of the axes of National Energy Sustainability Program.

He highlighted that this is an essential piece for the Cape Verdean energy transition program, ensuring that in addition to replacing fossil energy sources with renewable energy, what else can contribute and the cheapest and most expeditious way to avoid gas emissions? with greenhouse effects, involves reducing consumption by using energy more efficiently.

“These are small investments, but with big impacts and a very short return in terms of investment recovery”, explained Rito Évora.

The week, he emphasized, is being marked by an intense agenda of debate and communication on energy energy, covering topics such as the integration of renewables, energy storage, microproduction, forum, German-Cape Verdean symposium.

International cooperation is considered crucial to accelerate the energy transition at a global level, so bilateral and multilateral partnerships are vital to boost the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable future, as common global challenges require concerted responses.

Portugal signed an agreement with Cape Verde, in December, that provides for the conversion of debt into climate financing on the sidelines of the 28th United Nations Conference, with the first phase being dedicated to the conversion of an already installed photovoltaic solar park.
