Africa-Press – Cape verde. Linguist Ana Josefa Cardoso argued that there must be a balance between Creole and Portuguese in Cabo Verde to promote real bilingualism in statutory terms and use in communication in different contexts.
To Inforpress in Lisbon, Ana Josefa Cardoso considered that the officialization of the Cabo Verdean language [Creole] “is not a threat” to the Portuguese language for the place it occupies, that is, the two languages have occupied “different places”.
“But what we are looking for is a balance to promote real bilingualism both in statutory terms and in terms of use in communication in different contexts. There is a need to care for and develop both languages. None of them are going to steal the other’s place. The two languages will continue to cohabit and this cohabitation will be so much healthier, when each of them is better learned and dominated in its different aspects”, she told.
In turn, Márcia Souto and Filinto Elísio, from Rosa de Porcelana Editora, said they believed that the Constitution of the Republic of Cabo Verde reflects the will of Cabo Verdeans in the reference to the linguistic reality of the country, which is to put in “parity and cohabitation the two national languages – Cabo Verdean and Portuguese”.
