Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic, on the proposal of the Prime Minister, has appointed José Filomeno de Carvalho Dias Monteiro to the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Regional Integration. He is thus relieved of his post as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Belgium, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Republic of Hungary and the European Union.
“By the same Presidential Decree No. 14/2024, Ms. Miryan Djamila Sena Vieira is, in turn, reappointed to the post of Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation”, reads a statement from the Presidency of the Republic.
The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for this Wednesday, October 9, at 12 noon, at the Palace of the President of the Republic.
The appointment of the new minister follows the dismissal, by Presidential Decree No. 12/2024 of 7 October, also at the proposal of the Prime Minister, of Rui Alberto de Figueiredo Soares from the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Regional Integration.
On the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rui Figueiredo wrote that he left the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Regional Integration for personal reasons, thanking the country and the Prime Minister for the opportunity he had to once again serve the State of Cape Verde in the context of foreign policy.
“Since 2021, when I returned to head Cape Verdean diplomacy, the world has been experiencing very turbulent times, which have exponentially increased the challenges faced by any country, especially a small developing island state located in the middle of the Atlantic, challenges that are not compatible with simplistic and linear interpretations”, he wrote.
Figueiredo wished José Filomeno Monteiro continued success in his government.
“After 33 years of active political life, I thank my family and many friends for their unwavering support on this journey, and I ask God to allow me to continue serving the country in other activities,” he concluded.
