Africa-Press – Cape verde. The first temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cape Verde, built in Praia, whose foundation stone was laid on May 4, 2019, will be inaugurated on June 19.
According to the director of Public Relations of the referred church, Fernanda Mascarenhas, the construction is practically ready. Before its “dedication”, a period of three weeks, from May 21 to June 11, is reserved for the general public, with the exception of Sundays, to visit the temple, the first of this Church in the country.
The aim, he said, is to give them the opportunity to get to know the temple and its meaning, taking into account the “big difference” between a temple and a chapel.
“After three weeks of open doors, it will be formally dedicated on June 19th, in a strictly religious ceremony, and after the inauguration only church members who live certain standards can attend. Compared to chapels where they are open every day or every Sunday to the public, the temple is seen as a sacred place, because we believe it is the house of the Lord,” he clarified.
According to Fernanda Mascarenhas, temples provide places where they can make even more sacred commitments to God, one of which is marriage.
This Church, which currently has just over 15,000 members, with a presence on all the islands of the country, was officially recognized in Cape Verde in 1990, 32 years ago.
As informed by the person in charge of Public Relations, the Church has grown during this time due to its strong presence in terms of humanitarian service and the carrying out of missionary work.
The laying of the first stone for the construction of this church took place on the 4th of May 2019, with an estimated completion date of two years, but due to the pandemic it was delayed in its completion, and now, after three years, it will be inaugurated on the 19th of June. .
