Praia: Ten women benefit from a workshop that aims to transform waste into works of art

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Ten women participate for a week in the Hearts Art Workshop, promoted by the first lady in partnership with Brazilian artist Cida Lima, which aims to transform waste into works of art.

The intention, according to the promoters, is to later present works of art to society that are both sources of income, but also a contribution to the preservation of the environment.

In the opening act, the first lady, Débora Carvalho, stated that art is one of the areas that have worked precisely to encourage the participation of women, which has proven to be “not very expressive”, as well as several other segments in Cape Verde, hence the need to “intensify the female presence”.

“The face of poverty in Cape Verde has a feminine face, there is little participation of women in art and we want to show that it is possible to change this reality”, said the same source.

According to Debora Carvalho, there is usually still “some taboo” or some understanding that art is for those who don’t have much to do, it’s when there is some time left, so we have to “change this idea” and show Cape Verdean women that it is It is possible to “discover artistic gifts in them and turn this into a source of income”, he argued.

The trainer, the artist Cida Lima, for her part, highlighted that the main objective of this workshop is to develop potential for aesthetic and environmental censuses, transforming waste into works of art.

“It is training for people who work with this, to generate income, and who generate a quality product and that this product is of quality. Certainly, in addition to doing good for the environment, it will generate income, that’s what I want, so this training, the link I make with the environment, is the main vector”, he stated.

He explained that Oficina de Arte de Corações is justified by the way it works, “always with heart, a feeling of affection and delicacy”, which, he found, the Cape Verdean people “especially” possessed.

“I’ve been to many African countries, but I’ve never felt as welcomed as I do here. Because it symbolizes this affection, this delicacy that is natural for people here, I always communicate with them through affection, so the heart is present in my work, as a visual artist and as an academic”, she confided.

In turn, graduate Andreia Sanches praised the opportunity to participate in the workshop, hoping that it will be “an incredible exchange of experience”, that she will learn a lot and be able to put her learning into practice.

“We need to do something to improve the environment and recycling is important because everything is raw material that we can use, so I hope we can learn a lot more to put into practice and teach others,” he said.

The workshop, which runs from the 19th to the 23rd of this month, is aimed at ten women who already have some familiarity with the artistic field, as a way of improving their skills, allowing them to develop their potential and broaden their perspectives in art.
