Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of Praia City Council, Francisco Carvalho, announced today the installation of a video surveillance system at the Várzea cemetery to monitor and protect the site against possible incidents.
Francisco Carvalho was speaking to journalists at the end of the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the restoration of the Praia Jewish Cemetery.
“It is an extraordinary moment for us. Today, we are here witnessing the complete restoration of this space so important to our community”, declared Carvalho.
Among the measures implemented, the construction of a wall at the rear of the cemetery stands out, surrounded with barbed wire to guarantee the security of the site.
Additionally, new sidewalks have been created to facilitate access for visitors, while a video surveillance system is being installed to monitor and protect the cemetery against possible incidents.
“Previously, the cemetery was the target of robberies and acts of vandalism. We are working tirelessly to change this reality, raising the walls, installing fences and implementing modern security measures”, he explained.
Carvalho also revealed plans to improve the management of the cemetery, including the implementation of a georeferencing system for all tombs and graves, aiming to preserve the historical memory of the site, facilitating management and ensuring more efficient service to citizens.
“The books that record the graves are deteriorated, and the memory could be lost. We are committed to preserving this memory and facilitating the management of the cemetery for the benefit of everyone”, said Carvalho.
To conclude, the mayor announced the placement of identification plaques in both the Várzea cemetery and the São Filipe cemetery.
