Africa-Press – Cape verde. Cape Verde receives, on Tuesday, October 3, a two-day state visit from the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The German head of state, who will visit Santiago and São Vicente, will be awarded the Amílcar Cabral Order, First Degree, in recognition of his “personal commitment to enhancing special relations of friendship and cooperation” with Cape Verde.
The visit takes place at the invitation of the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, within the framework of relations of friendship, fraternity and cooperation established for a long time between the two countries, according to a note from the Presidency of the Republic.
This is the first time that a German head of state has visited Cape Verde, which, according to the same source, demonstrates the desire of the two heads of state to raise the important bilateral cooperation between the two countries to a higher level, particularly in the areas economic, scientific and human resources training, with a focus on renewable energy, climate change, tourism and staff training.
“One of the oldest and most constant partners in the development of Cape Verde, Germany has effectively been a friend and firm supporter of the Cape Verdean people, even since the past periods of the National Liberation Struggle, at the time mainly under the action of German civil society itself”, he highlights.
The excellence of cooperation between Germany and Cape Verde stands out, emphasizes the presidential office, also in the field of oceanographic and atmospheric research, with the construction, in 2006, of the Mindelo Oceanographic Research Center, the result of a strategic partnership between the Ministry German Federal Council for Education and Research.
Distinction
As part of this State visit and in recognition of his personal commitment to enhancing relations of friendship and cooperation between the Federal Republic of Germany and Cape Verde, the German President will receive from the hands of the Cape Verdean Head of State the insignia of the highest decoration , the Amílcar Cabral Order, First Degree, according to Presidential Decree no. 22/2023, of September 19th.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s State Visit, which covers the islands of Santiago and São Vicente, begins on Wednesday with a welcome by his Cape Verdean counterpart and Military Honors at the Palace of the President of the Republic, followed by a meeting between the two Heads of State and an extended meeting between delegations from the two countries.
The program at the Palace of the President of the Republic continues with the decoration ceremony of the German President and a Joint Press Conference, in the 5th of July Hall.
Praia Keys
Still on Wednesday morning, the German Head of State receives the Keys to the City of Praia, in the Town Hall, goes to the Amílcar Cabral Memorial to pay homage with the laying of a wreath, and is received at the National Assembly in Special Session, and pays a courtesy visit to the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva.
In the afternoon, a meeting will be held with representatives of Cape Verdean Civil Society, as well as a visit to the Monuments and Historical Sites of the Old City, World Heritage Sites.
Trip to São Vicente
The second day of the visit will be entirely dedicated to São Vicente, with visits to the Mindelo Oceanographic Center and the Cape Verde Atmospheric Observatory, two important milestones of German cooperation.
On that occasion, the two Presidents will lay the First Stone for the construction of the new building of the Cape Verde Environmental Observatory Laboratory.
The German Head of State leaves Cape Verde on Thursday afternoon, after a restricted meeting with the President of the Republic, at the People’s Palace, in Mindelo, where farewell greetings will also take place, with Military Honors.
