President of the Olympic Committee Draws Attention to Challenges and Priorities towards the 2028 Olympic Games

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the Cape Verde Olympic Committee, Filomena Fortes, warned today of challenges in participating in the 2028 Olympic Games, highlighting the need for a change in the membership of the Cape Verdean Boxing Federation (FCB).

In a statement to the press, within the framework of the 4th congress of the Association of Portuguese-Speaking Olympic Committees (ACOLOP), Filomena Fortes detailed her recent visit to Los Angeles (USA), as part of the Evaluation Commission for the 2028 Olympic Games.

Fortes announced that she should return to the USA at the end of May to analyze the preparations and risks, such as the forest fires that affected the region.

“We need to ensure that everything runs safely, especially considering the risk of fires in the summer. Prevention will be essential”, she stressed.

Filomena Fortes also confirmed that boxing has been officially confirmed as a sport for the 2028 Games, which she considers “excellent news” for Cape Verde, a country that has already secured one qualified athlete in the sport.

However, she warned that in order to guarantee the participation of Cape Verdean boxers, it will be necessary to disassociate itself from AIBA, currently not recognised by the IOC, and affiliate with World Boxing.

“The decision is up to the national federation itself, but if we want to be at the Olympic Games, this change is inevitable”, she stated, revealing that the president of World Boxing has been invited to the congress and will participate online to explain the benefits of the new affiliation.

The ACOLOP congress, which is taking place in Praia, brings together representatives from several African countries with the aim of strengthening cooperation and strategies for developing Olympic sports in the region.
