Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, praised Cape Verdean democracy this Thursday, in the city of Praia, highlighting it as an example at a global level.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa made these statements to the press at the end of his visit to the President of the National Assembly, Austelino Correia. During the meeting, issues related to cooperation and political life between the two countries were discussed.

“A meeting that was in fact very important, because it allowed, on the one hand, to salute the example of Cape Verdean democracy, which is a much cited example, much admired, and much praised at a global level, and, on the other hand, the fundamental role of the National Assembly, which is the house of democracy”, declared the Portuguese head of state.

As Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa emphasized, there is no strong democracy without a robust pillar, which is parliament. This pillar reflects the diversity of perspectives in society, the free expression and pluralism of the people.

“Therefore, a strong and respected National Assembly means an equally strong and respected democracy. That’s what I came to greet, salute and praise”, he stressed.

“The President of the Republic of Portugal also highlighted the various collaborations between the National Assembly of Cape Verde and the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic within the scope of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, as well as in bilateral terms, which has been constant over many years.

For his part, the president of the National Assembly, Austelino Correia, highlighted that this visit reflects the excellence of relations between Cape Verde and Portugal.

“The arrival of the President of the Republic of Portugal to the National Assembly is also a symbol of the respect he has for Cape Verdean democracy, especially for the National Assembly which is the nerve center of the political system in Cape Verde, the plural body, the exercise body of contradiction, of dissent, but always focusing on what is most important, which is serving the common good”, highlighted the president of the National Assembly.

Austelino Correia reaffirmed that Cape Verde has a “robust” democracy, but highlighted that this is not a reason to boast. On the contrary, he said, this gives more responsibility to continue protecting and consolidating Cape Verdean democracy, especially at a time when democracy is at risk in several countries.

“As we know, democracy is at risk in several countries around the world, and Cape Verde, as a country with a democratic tradition, needs to protect and strengthen its democracy”, he maintained.
