Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the Order of Nurses, Aniceto Santos, considered today that the lack of nurses and the workload are challenges that have affected the physical and psychological condition of healthcare professionals.
In an interview with Inforpress, president Aniceto Santos explained that there are trained nurses on the market waiting for a competition to fit into the Health system.
He spoke about this as part of the celebration of International Nurses’ Day, which is celebrated today, May 12th, under the motto: “The economic power of care”, chosen by the International Council of Nurses (ICN).
“There are more than 500 nurses in the competition, a very significant number, but everything will depend on the Government’s budget availability”, revealed Aniceto Santos.
Another problem Aniceto Santos pointed out is related to the workload since, in his opinion, regardless of the workload, the number of nurses is insufficient and they continue to “suffer overload”.
Santos highlighted that all health structures in the country manifest this “insufficiency”, that is, the need to have more nurses.
“But it is more striking on islands that have central hospitals, namely in São Vicente and Cidade da Praia, with a greater number of inpatient beds.
At the level of the national health system, there are currently 925 nurses, included in the order are 1100, said the president.
According to the International Council of Nurses, although Nursing is the backbone of healthcare, it constantly faces not only financial but also social restrictions, with social undervaluation.
In the case of Cape Verde, Aniceto Santos considered that it is a date that marks the entire career of nurses, being the first time that this date has been celebrated after the creation of the Order.
As for the motto, this issue of care also has to do with the participation of nurses, it also takes into account the difficulty regarding economic sustainability. Nurses have been making their contribution to the economy of care.
