Africa-Press – Cape verde. The prices of basic food products worldwide showed a “mixed” trend in the last week of December 2023 and at the beginning of January 2024, with rice, flour and sugar showing an increase.

The information is contained in INFOSemanal no 2/2024, released today by the National Secretariat for Food and Nutritional Security (SNSAN) in light of the behavior of food prices on the international market.

According to the information bulletin, global corn export prices registered a decline, supported by favorable weather conditions for the development of crops in the main origins and appreciation of the US dollar.

The world sugar market, they point out, was impacted by the reduction in sugar production in India and the increase in demand, while global sea freight prices registered a downward trend in relation to the month of December 2023.

World wheat export prices, indicates the same source, showed a mixed trend compared to last week, with in Russia, wheat export prices showing a comparative increase, while in the European Union (EU), wheat prices Wheat fell slightly in a calm market, mainly influenced by concerns about the competitiveness of exports.

The same source explains that world rice export prices showed an upward trend, with in Thailand, the reduction in the availability of old crops and exchange rate movements offering support to rice export prices, and in Vietnam, rice prices rice remained stable compared to last week.

The fortnightly analysis of the behavior of food prices on the international market indicates that world soybean oil export prices showed a mixed trend in relation to last week, with soybean oil prices in Argentina increasing by around 0 .9% and in Brazil a drop of around 4.3%.

According to INFOSemanal, world sugar export prices registered an upward trend, with Brazil being the country that exported 27.5 (Million Tons) of sugar in the first 11 months of the year and with an increase of 9.9% in compared to the same period last year.

In India, the document highlights, sugar production totaled 11.2MT in the first three months of the 2023/24 season, a drop of 7.7% compared to the same period last season.
