Africa-Press – Cape verde. The project of the rural and religious tourist village of Luzia Nunes and Sanctuary of Our Lady of Socorro will be socialized today with the community of Luzia Nunes said the councilwoman of Culture, Lia Barbosa.
The act of socialization of the project takes place in the late afternoon at the headquarters of the LuzAril Association and will coincide with the beginning of the training in cooperativism whose objective is to provide the trainees of tools that allow them to create “souvenirs” such as production of candles, lace, embroidery linked to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Socorro and thus dynamize the local economy.
For the implementation of the project of the rural and religious tourist village of Luzia Nunes and Sanctuary of Our Lady of Socorro, the building mobilized part of the resources together with an international organization of the Francophonie that made available 35 thousand euros (around 3,900 escudos).
Within the project board will be marked the route and the chamber should always work the alternative route towards a tourist and walking village, some houses will be selected and worked in order to help families create the conditions to receive tourists.
Luzia Nunes is a village in the municipality of São Filipe, located south of the city of São Filipe and has the sea as a backdrop in a painting in which Brava Island and its Rombo islets stand out.
The majority of young people, about a thousand inhabitants, have as their main economic activity irrigation agriculture, expressed in the irrigated perimeters of Monte Geneva and English Palms, and the raising of cattle, especially the goat.
This village has another potential that, according to a press release from the Municipality of São Filipe “sell isolated and immersed in silence” that is the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Socorro, patron saint of travelers and shipwrecked houses whose chapel was built by Padre Amaro Monteiro Pereira de Rebelo, in the mid-18th century, rebuilt and restored several times.
The sanctuary was a factor of attraction par excellence and is seen as a lever for the development of religious tourism throughout the island of Fogo.
The tourist potential of Luzia Nunes “sui generis” and diversified are recognized as a foundation for the development of rural tourism and nature expressed in the agri-tourism and appreciation of local products and in cultural tourism associated with popular festivals and secular festivals in honor of popular saints, such as Our Lady of the Socorro, highlighted the aforementioned press note.
“Religious tourism is the great promise in the tourism sector and the religious, patrimonial and cultural value of the shrine of Our Lady of Socorro can be affirmed that tourism in Luzia Nunes has its maximum expression in the rural, religious and spiritual tourism of said sanctuary, a place of pilgrimage where every year thousands of people, Cape Verdeans and foreigners move, especially on the day of Our Lady of the Socorro, August 5”, he said.
The good road infrastructures, their proximity to the port and aerodrome of São Filipe and the availability of accommodation in single-family houses to host tourists from where they can make pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Socorro is an attraction for those who want to experience unique religious experiences.
The transformation of the chapel of Nossa Senhora de Socorro, located south of the city of São Filipe, just over ten kilometers away, into a “true shrine” falls within the domain of religious tourism and in this project of a tourist village that the municipality of São Filipe intends to develop in partnership with the Catholic Church.
The rehabilitation of the vicinal path São Filipe/Nossa Senhora Socorro that is traveled annually by hundreds of pilgrims is also being considered in the framework of the project.
