Rcv's Director Promises Editorial Autonomy Amid Attacks

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The director of Radio Cabo Verde (RCV) stated today that the radio’s editorial autonomy is fully respected by the administration and criticized the lack of solidarity from journalistic organizations during attacks on the station’s editorial line.

In an interview with Inforpress, Marcos Fonseca explained that he has never suffered external interference, neither from the Editorial Board nor from other bodies, highlighting the importance of complying with internal rules and professional ethics.

“My work has been completely respected. I have never suffered interference from anyone outside, nobody has tried to influence me, neither the board nor anyone else,” he explained, lamenting the lack of action on issues involving the radio’s editorial line.

According to Marcos Fonseca, up to this point his work “has deserved respect,” emphasizing that both the RCV management and the RTC Board of Directors know “how far they should go.”

“And we have been working together in an excellent way, not just good, excellent, and I think we have everything to do an excellent job,” he assured.

The director lamented, however, that when the radio station faced criticism for an editorial decision, there were no expressions of support from associations and organizations in the sector.

“When we suffered an attack for an editorial decision, there was no movement, no solidarity, no Ajoc, no FIJ, no one stood up for a strictly editorial decision,” he indicated, reinforcing that journalism must separate personal interests.

“It was an attack on press freedom, because it was a direct attack on RCV’s editorial line,” he argued, adding that there was even a threat from a government official.

The editorial boards of TCV and RCV reaffirmed today their solidarity with the TCV management and requested the annulment of the decisions taken without validation from the competent bodies.

In a press release sent on Saturday, the 8th, to the Inforpress newsroom, this board stated that they defend the investigation of responsibilities arising from the institutional and financial impacts and reaffirm the need to respect editorial autonomy and internal programming and information competencies.
