Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of PAICV today accused the prime minister of involving Cape Verde in a “major scandal, irreparable damage”, which tarnishes the credibility and external image of this country, which is strongly committed to the protection of human rights.
These accusations were made by Rui Semedo, at a press conference to speak about the Alex Saab case, who was arrested in Cape Verde, before being extradited to the United States of America and whose release was announced in recent days.
“The Alex Saab case is, even in terms of the outcome, a huge scandal and the prime minister wants to get out of it, quietly, as if nothing had happened, trying to hide behind the institutions of Justice”, said the president of the African Party of Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV).
He recalled, in this particular, that the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, as someone who wants to “wash his hands and get rid of this matter quickly”, said that he at the time defended in a “laconic way”, that Cabo Green did what he had to do.
“It is clear that from the point of view of the intervention of Justice institutions, we refrain from making comments so as not to interfere with the autonomy and independence of the Courts, but it is also increasingly clear that this arrest was the result of a political decision, involving the Government from Cape Verde, added the politician about this case.
For Rui Semedo, the Head of Government cannot just make this empty declaration and go to sleep peacefully, he considered that he must first resort to the archive of his conscience and analyze whether the Government acted well by involving Cape Verde in this confusion that did not bring any benefit for this country.
“We cannot lose sight of the fact that Alex Saab’s arrest had already been the subject of a decision by the ECOWAS Court, contradicting Cape Verde’s position and demanding his release and that, more recently, even the United Nations had considered this detention irregular , namely, for violation of human rights”, he added.
Now, with this release, the same source considered that this opens up an opportunity for the Government of Cape Verde to coldly analyze what really happened, what failed and what needs to be done to reduce the margin of error on issues that involve other countries and international law.
“We really have to ask if we are not heading towards a drift in our foreign policy that will be making the country vulnerable and discrediting”, highlighted Rui Semedo.
The leader of the PAICV said he hopes that the Government will adjust its pace and rediscover the path of a “more responsible and more coherent” foreign policy with the tradition of “mature and intelligent” diplomacy.
For the PAICV, foreign policy should be a matter of broad national understanding that involves all political formations and mobilizes the entire national community, in an open and fruitful dialogue to safeguard the country’s interests, but also to consolidate the image external and strengthen the foundations of credibility of these islands.
“We have to learn from our mistakes, but we have to prevent our practice and routine from being a permanent succession of mistakes”, he emphasized.
