Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the Movement for Democracy (MpD), Ulisses Correia e Silva, challenged today, in Sal, the Cape Verdean youth belonging to the fan party to have attitude, be strong and resilient, and present on all islands in the country.
Ulisses Correia e Silva spoke as president of the Movement for Democracy (MpD), at the opening of the 1st edition of the Youth University for Democracy (JpD), which he witnessed, promoted by the youth party structure attached to the fan party.
Congratulating the initiative, he said that this event, which will take place over two days in Sal, involving around 50 young people from different municipalities and councils in the country, is making an “important difference”, taking into account the reasons and principles that the party defends .
Highlighting the work and dynamism of the party’s youth structure, Ulisses Correia e Silva asked, however, young people to be even more present in “all parts” of the country.
“Cape Verde needs young people with a positive, strong and resilient attitude. Politics is a noble activity and democracy only becomes stronger with the active participation of young people”, she emphasized.
Focusing on the upcoming elections, the MpD leader launched an appeal to young people to register, as the census gives them the right to vote and choose, and in electoral moments to assert their political citizenship.
“That is why our appeal is that JpD serves as a reference for a new attitude, a strong commitment to the country, to the municipalities where young people live, to never forget that they are responsible citizens, despite being young , but as soon as the route is completed”, he alluded.
On this basis, asked to comment on young people’s interest in politics, Ulisses Correia e Silva said he thinks there is this interest, however, he understands that it is necessary to “open the doors and windows more”.
“To feel that there are no barriers and obstacles to political participation, to feel welcome, to feel that through politics they can fulfill an important part of their life as a citizen, to pass messages that create trust”, he highlighted.
The aim of this first edition is to offer young people a forum for debate and knowledge focused on the importance of public policies and recurring themes for the construction of a youth agenda.
“Municipal public policies and their impacts on youth”, was the first panel in debate with Júlio Lopes, president of the Municipal Council of Sal, as speaker.
After lunch, at 3:00 pm, the second panel, under the theme “Youth opportunities in the State Budget for 2024”, had as speaker Olavo Correia, vice-president of the MpD and Minister of Finance.
