Sanitation is "One of the Biggest Challenges" in Praia, Says Francisco Carvalho

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The problem of sanitation in the country’s capital continues to be “one of the greatest challenges” for the administration of the mayor of Praia, Francisco Carvalho. “We have had more difficult times, but we will continue to improve”, said the mayor of Praia, on the day that the city of Praia celebrates its 167th anniversary.

The mayor also promises to continue with the program of building bathrooms.

“Our goal is to ensure that all houses here in Praia have bathrooms”, said Francisco Carvalho, in a statement to Rádio de Cabo Verde (RCV). The mayor also revealed that the city has “structural projects” for the issue of sanitation.

Improving urban mobility, by unblocking the city’s most critical connections, is another focus.

“For example, we have the entrance to Vila Nova, the Terra Branca roundabout, the roundabout next to the Poeta restaurant and the Palmarejo exit”, said the mayor, who promises to solve these problems in the capital, presenting, according to him, “technical alternatives to ensure that traffic is clearer at these critical points”. Francisco Carvalho’s plans also include the creation of more alternative routes, and he gives the example of the route that connects Ponta d’Água, Achadinha and Paiol. One of Francisco Carvalho’s objectives is to pave the road that connects Achada de Santo António to Palmarejo, from the “A Bolha” area. A “Florida Serenade” kicked off the celebrations of Praia City and Municipality Day on Monday the 28th, which this year will take on a “renewed shine” under the motto of the 50th anniversary of Cape Verde’s independence. Praia City Day has been established since 2018, by decision of the Municipal Assembly, to commemorate the elevation to the category of city of the then Vila da Praia on the Island of Santiago, by decree of June 14, 1858.
