Africa-Press – Cape verde. The hydro-agricultural project of Ribeira dos Picos, Santa Cruz, valued at around 70 million escudos will be launched on the afternoon of this Monday, 24th, by the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva. The same aims to improve the system of mobilization, storage and distribution of water in the community.

Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva, accompanied by the Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Gilberto Silva, launched this Monday afternoon, 24, the Ribeira dos Picos hydro-agricultural project, in the municipality of Santa Cruz.

According to a press release from the Government, this project aims at the valorization and efficient use of natural resources in Ribeira dos Picos.

Five new pumping stations

Among other interventions, this project covers the construction and rehabilitation of shelter houses for the electromechanical and hydrodynamic systems, supply and installation of five (5) new pumping stations.

This, in addition to the installation of pipelines, construction of two (2) 600m3 reservoirs, and a rehabilitation of one (1) 300m3 reservoir.

55 Kwp Photovoltaic Solar System

The Ribeira dos Picos hydro-agricultural project, valued at around 70 million escudos, also includes the supply and installation of a 55 Kwp Solar Photovoltaic System for the operation of the pumps.

Funded by the Government of Cape Verde, through the Program for the Promotion of Rural Socio-Economic Opportunities (POSER) in partnership with IFAD, this project has the engagement of the Municipality of Santa Cruz, benefiting the localities of Polonzinho/Tamareira and Setchani/Varzea New.

Minimize joblessness

Its completion in February 2023 will impact the lives of 127 men and 25 women, with the improvement of the water mobilization, storage and distribution system.

The main objective is “to minimize the lack of employment in the communities covered, provide the creation of income-generating activities and respond to the demand for a change in the standard of living of families based on sustainable agriculture”.

The launch of the project by Ulisses Correia e Silva, in Ribeira dos Picos, Santa Cruz, is scheduled for 3 pm, prior to the visit of the Head of Government to the Municipality of Santa Catarina, to preside over the United Nations Day Celebration ceremony in Ribeira da Barca.
