Santa Cruz wants to make Pedra Badejo the “capital of funaná” in order to promote this musical genre

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The mayor of Santa Cruz expressed this Monday, the ambition to make the city of Pedra Badejo a “capital of funaná”, aiming to promote this Cape Verdean musical genre, which has its epicentre in that municipality of Santiago.

“Funaná, according to history, is a musical genre that was born in the interior of Santiago, more specifically in the municipality of Santa Cruz, so we want funaná to be institutionalised,” Carlos Silva told Inforpress, regarding a meeting / debate on funaná, which takes place this Tuesday, 08, as part of the celebration of Katchás Day in Santa Cruz.

The event, held in partnership with the Institute of Cultural Heritage (IPC), aims to collect subsidies for the candidature of Pedra Badejo to the capital of funaná and the classification of this musical genre as national intangible cultural heritage.

The Katchás Day in Santa Cruz, according to the mayor, aims to “remember and honour” the man who is considered the “King of Funaná”, who, if he was alive, would be 72 years old this Tuesday, August 8.
