Africa-Press – Cape verde. The artist Tony Luísa, born in Paul, Santo Antão, recognized today, after the completion of the statue of Our Lady of the Rosary, which gained more notoriety thanks to the making of sculptures and statues.
Tony Luísa told Inforpress that after the end of the statue of Our Lady of the Rosary, in the viewpoint overlooking the city of Ribeira Grande, received positive reviews of a work that considered to be the realization of a dream.
“I heard a lot of comments, even before bringing the shape/mold of the statue. An Italian woman told me that although she is not religious, the image conveys something different. Some priests have said they have traveled to several countries and have never seen a “holy one” with such a well-achieved face. Many netizens have shared the image on social networks,” he said with great satisfaction.
The artist took the opportunity to reveal some works of his own, with emphasis on the image of Our Lady of the Rosary (largest statue of Cape Verde) which, in his opinion, means the realization of a dream and stressed that the objective was to do a job with a good finish and highlight “for no one ‘botard’ defect”.
“I have done some works, for example, the statue in honor of fishermen and fishers (Ponta do Sol), the statue of a horse (Paul), busts and paintings in Santo Antão and São Vicente,” he said.
Tony Luísa specializes in painting, sculpture, statues, busts and revolutionized the way carnival makers in São Vicente thanks to its advanced techniques.
To make his works, the artist only rescues his natural talent since he did not attend any art school or did any specific training, except a period in which he lived in the city of Praia where he worked with his older brother, Domingos Luísa, also a visual artist.
Tony Luísa was born in Paul and found a taste for art in his family. He began working at the age of 17 and, after the period of time he worked with his brother, he continued with his own creation in São Vicente and, currently, at the age of 45, he lives in Santo Antão.
The statue of the patron saint of the parish of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, erected in the viewpoint overlooking the city of Ribeira Grande, will be inaugurated today, July 26.
The inauguration of the statue of Our Lady of the Rosary, a replica of the image of the saint in the local Mother Church, must count on the blessing of the Bishop of the Diocese of Mindelo, Mgr. Ildo Fortes, and the presidency of the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, who, on that occasion, will be visited to the island of Santo Antão.
It is a work with 11 meters, from the base to the crown, being, according to the Mayor of Ribeira Grande, Orlando Delgado, “the highest in the country”.
Speaking to Inforpress, Councilman Armando Mariano said that it is an investment that is around the 22,000 escudos, used in the construction of access, in the rehabilitation of pedestrian access that, in the past, served as passage to Porto Novo, in the construction of the platforms, the kiosk and the bathrooms, as well as the statue, properly said.
“The path was from the time when there was no road to Porto Novo (decade of 50). We also want to rescue history itself, create a circuit within the city, that is, make the same path that was made in the past,” Orlando Delgado had said in May, when he told Inforpress about the work.
Orlando Delgado then explained to Inforpress that access to the viewpoint, where the statue of Our Lady of the Rosary was erected, contemplates two itineraries and those who visit the space will have the opportunity to enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city of Ribeira Grande.
