Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Ribeira Grande City Hall delivered a new synthetic turf field to the Football Association and clubs of the Northern Zone of Santo Antão this Monday, creating better conditions for the practice of the sport.
According to the Ribeira Grande City Council, the acquisition of the new turf for the João Serra stadium represents an investment of 32,500 thousand escudos, financed through a project developed by the municipality and the Government of Cape Verde, together with the Ministry of Sport, and is part of the plan to improve and upgrade sports infrastructure.
With the availability of the new turf, the clubs see an old demand fulfilled and now have improved conditions for the training of young athletes and for holding official competitions.
During the speeches at the handover ceremony, the mayor of Ribeira Grande, Armindo Luz, highlighted the Government’s role in the investment and promised to continue investing more in sport in the region.
“We always said we would deliver, and we did. This moment is only possible thanks to serious partner institutions, such as the Government of Cape Verde, through the Ministry of Sport and the Institute of Sport and Youth, as well as other entities,” he highlighted.
According to the same source, this is the first intervention in the João Serra stadium, which will be rebuilt, and “the city hall has already reserved 20 million escudos” available to proceed with the work.
On the other hand, Nilson Santos, National Director of Sport, stated that the Institute of Sport and Youth – IDJ responded to the request to equip the stadium for better competitions to serve the teams from the municipalities of Paul and Ribeira Grande, since “it is one of the best sporting regions in the country”.
Also present at the event, Hermes Pinto, president of the northern zone football association, spoke of “enormous pride” thanks to the high-quality pitch and asked everyone to make good use of the stadium and a bus made available to the sporting region. At the same event, a bus donated by the Cape Verdean Football Federation (FCF), within the framework of the FIFA Forward program, was made available to the football association and clubs to strengthen the institutional capacity of regional associations.
The vehicle handover ceremony was blessed by the parish priest of Our Lady of Livramento Parish, Father Rui Nobre.
The 2025/26 sports season in the Northern Zone of Santo Antão began today with the first round of the regional cup.
