Santo Antão: Controlled sanitary landfill ready in two months

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The controlled sanitary landfill in Santo Antão will be ready in two months, guaranteed the mayor of Porto Novo, and president of the Association of Municipalities of Santo Antão, Aníbal Fonseca. However, the infrastructure can already receive garbage.

About 80% of the works on the landfill are now complete, explained Aníbal Fonseca during the visit of the Minister of Agriculture and Environment to the landfill, which is being built near Ribeira Brava, on the border between the municipalities of Porto Novo and Paul.

Therefore, in the opinion of the president of the Association of Municipalities of Santo Antão, it no longer makes sense to continue to deposit garbage in the intermunicipal dump, which “is compromising the environment and tourism” on this island.

“Great embankment”

This mayor assured that Santo Antão is being equipped with “a large controlled sanitary landfill, a well thought-out, long-lived and environmentally sustainable work”, which represents an investment of 18 million escudos.

During Gilberto Silva’s visit to the landfill, the need to move forward with investments in machinery and in the resolution of the “environmental liabilities” caused by the inter-municipal dump was raised.

That is, the removal of all the garbage deposited, over the years, in this dump, which will be transformed into a forest area.

Gains

The construction of the improved landfill, which is part of the operational plan for waste management for Santo Antão, consists of the construction of a 650-meter track and a space where all the waste produced in the three municipalities will be deposited.

The work also includes the construction of a wall to prevent the deposited waste from being dragged into the sea, and an 800-meter-long fence to prevent animals from entering the space.

Annually, more than four thousand tons of garbage are produced in Santo Antão, according to the operational plan for waste management for Santo Antão.
