Santo Antão: Fundação Fundamental denounces “irregular and abusive cutting” of trees in several locations on the island

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Fundamental Foundation today denounced the “irregular and abusive” cutting of trees in several locations in Santo Antão. This practice is worrying environmentalists who are calling for the fight against what they call an “environmental crime”.

As the foundation advances, the cutting of trees “is becoming a recurrent practice” in Santo Antão and constitutes “a serious environmental crime”, a situation in relation to which “the competent authorities” must take a position, he added.

Fundamental gives, as an example, cases recorded in recent days in Paul where mango trees and breadfruit were cut. Another case was recorded in Boca de Figueira, in Ribeira Grande, where a century-old hose was also cut.

“Such situations worry this foundation, whose main objective is to defend, preserve and promote the integrated and sustainable environmental development of Santo Antão”, adds Fundamental, which appeals to the municipal councils and the delegations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment “to jointly find a solution that contributes to putting an end to these practices”.

In a press release, this foundation explains that “cutting or pruning trees without technical/legal authorization from the competent authorities (Municipal Councils and Delegations of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture) is an environmental crime, “a recurrent practice” that is worrying environmentalists in Saint Anthony.
