Africa-Press – Cape verde. 24 years ago, an aviation accident killed 18 people in the Ribeira da Torre Valley, in Santo Antão. The Coast Guard military “dornier” D4-CBC had taken off in São Vicente towards the Ponta do Sol airfield, but poor visibility led to the aircraft crashing.

The Armed Forces Dornier plane was on TACV flight 502 when the tragedy occurred, having taken off from São Vicente airport with 16 passengers and two crew members on board bound for Ponta do Sol airfield, which since then has been closed to traffic for security reasons.

The poor visibility, according to authorized sources in the matter, was identified as the cause of this tragedy, claiming that it prevented the landing and that the last contact between Commander Borges and the Control Tower in São Vicente was recorded at 11:56, noting that would return to the island of Porto Grande due to landing difficulties.

The former colonel of the Armed Forces, António Carlos Tavares, popularly known as Sabú, and who at that time was the judge of the Military Court, recalled the event to Inforpress with “great sadness and consternation”.
