Africa-Press – Cape verde. Santo Antão received another cruise ship call today, the third this season, which throughout this Tuesday brings hundreds of tourists to the island, Inforpress found on site.
This is the ship HS Spitsbergen, flying the Norwegian flag, coming from the port of Sal Rei (Boa Vista), bringing on board more than 300 guests who, until the end of the day, go on excursions to various points on the island of Santo Antão.
The next port of call for this ship, which will return to Santo Antão this November, will be the port of Vale dos Cavaleiros, on the island of Fogo.
Until December, Santo Antão will also receive, in addition to the HS Spitsbergen, the ships Corinthian and Variety Voyager.
Santo Antão can assert itself as a destination for cruise tourism with the completion of the port extension project to allow the docking of larger cruise ships, believe the municipal authorities on this island, who have been encouraging the Government to move forward with the project for the second phase of this port infrastructure.
“The second phase of expansion of the Porto Novo port should guarantee the recognition of Santo Antão as a destination for cruise tourism”, writes the city council in its investment plan for 2024, to which Inforpress had access.
This port, built in 1962, has three piers measuring 45, 115 and 135 meters.
It was remodeled in 2013, with an investment of 1.8 million contos that allowed the expansion of the berth and embankment, as well as the construction of the maritime station building with two thousand square meters of covered area.
Studies presented in 2021 say that the expansion project will allow improvements in navigability conditions in the port’s maneuvering basin, as well as the berthing of cabotage ships and cruise ships up to 200 meters in length.
