Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Mayor of Ribeira Grande stated this Monday that the municipality has been implementing structured measures, coordinated with the Government, to eradicate extreme poverty and reduce absolute poverty in the municipality.
In statements to Inforpress, Mayor Armindo da Luz explained that, since the executive publicly assumed this commitment in March of last year, joint work has been developed with the Government, as it is a challenge that “no municipality can overcome alone”.
Among the main measures adopted, Armindo da Luz highlighted the regularization of precarious employment contracts for caregivers in the municipality, guaranteeing greater job stability, income, and security for dozens of families, mostly headed by women.
In the area of social protection, he mentioned the strengthening of the support network for the elderly, with the opening of a new Day Center in the town of Corda, which will serve the Eastern Plateau, bringing the number of these structures in the municipality to five.
Regarding education, the politician highlighted the reinforcement of school transport, which has reduced monthly expenses for families, and pointed to the increase in the number of beneficiaries of the social pension, which now covers 1,812 people.
In the area of health, the same source revealed municipal support in financing medicines, specialist consultations, medical-hospital examinations, and complementary diagnostic means, such as CT scans and magnetic resonance imaging.
The Mayor of Ribeira Grande also referred to the impact of social water and energy tariffs in reducing the expenses of the most vulnerable families and announced the signing of a program contract with the Ministry of Family, Inclusion and Social Development for the creation of a Mobile Care Unit in the municipality.
Armindo da Luz explained that this unit will allow the provision of health care and rehabilitation services to people with disabilities in their homes, reducing costs for families and reinforcing social inclusion.
According to the mayor, eradicating extreme poverty is an ongoing process, which is why, he assured, the municipality is acting with concrete measures, geared towards results and focused on human dignity.
