Africa-Press – Cape verde. The mayor of São Domingos, Isaias Varela, denounced this Monday, 18, that his team inherited a council in “financial bankruptcy”, whose action is being limited due to “large debts”. However, he guarantees that he will continue to work to fulfill the desideratum of a “new hope for São Domingos”.
A year and a half after taking office, the current municipal team, from São Domingos, led by Isaías Varela, held a press conference this Monday, 18, to provide information on the administrative, financial and patrimonial situation of the municipality.
Cited by Inforpress, the mayor advanced that this “quite troubled” period, marked by a “very deep” economic and social crisis, and in a contingency context with “strong impacts” on the lives of people, families and communities, requires a “strong commitment” and a “doubled commitment”, in the defense of the common good and in the promotion of the public interest.
Inherited debts exceed 260 thousand contos
“In fact, the current team inherited a chamber in financial bankruptcy, a chamber with debts amounting to 260 million escudos, which corresponds to more than 50 percent (%) of our revenue budget”, declared Isaías Varela.
The same added that the situation is more serious considering that the vast majority of these debts were unknown by the current city council team, since, he said, they were not declared in the “deficient and turbulent” process of transfer of portfolios.
He indicated a debt of more than 10 thousand contos, whose case was already in the Court for collection of a company in the square, for the construction of the kindergarten and Community Center of Praia Formosa, another debt of about four thousand contos, together with another company in the square for the construction of the road to Nora.
Among the debts, he also highlighted about one million escudos for the construction of Praça Pastel, another of about 17 thousand contos, with a company in the square related to the construction of Praça Ntoni Denti D’oru, Praça Paços do Concelho, requalification and Praça de Cancelo, and requalification of Achada Baleia, among other works.
Destination of government funds for the municipality
“It is important that all citizens know that the referred projects, all of them, were financed by the Central Government, through the Environment, Tourism and PRAA Funds”, he recalled.
In this sense, he questioned the destination of the funds transferred to the Municipality of São Domingos by the Government, in the previous term and to the previous municipal team, to finance these works, stating that access to this information is a right of the citizens of São Domingos.
However, the mayor pointed out that the debts inherited by the current team are not just for the works, so he also denounced “different and large” debts with suppliers and third parties, with “disastrous impacts” on the future projection of the municipality.
other debts
Included in this list are PTE 17 million to Finance, PTE 40 million to the INPS, PTE 13 million to Electra, PTE 7 million to communications companies, and PTE 3 million to AdS.
Added to these amounts, according to the same, are 2,700 contos from a contract for the provision of services, 120,000,000 in credits with the bank, in addition to arrears with ANMCV and MAS and the provision of NOSI services.
“(…) The inherited financial situation is the result of careless, irresponsible management that violates the most elementary principles of public administration, such as efficiency, effectiveness, public interest, legality and transparency”, he accused.
However, he renewed the commitment to the people of São Domingos to continue working to fulfill the desideratum of a “new hope for São Domingos”, with “more transparency in the management of public affairs”.
