Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Municipal Council of São Miguel received today 600,000 escudos donated by the Overseas Chinese Foundation of Cape Verde, destined to support the recovery efforts in the municipality following the damage caused by heavy rains.

Before this event, the president of the São Miguel Municipal Council, Herménio Fernandes, expressed his profound gratitude for the donation.

According to the mayor, the heavy rains of the 13th and 14th, as well as those that occurred on the 23rd and 24th, caused significant damage to municipal infrastructure, the road network, family homes, agricultural plots, and flood control works.

The impacts, he emphasized, also extended to hydrographic basins and various housing areas, resulting in significant economic losses, noting that, despite the severity of the damage, there were no casualties.

Herménio Fernandes affirmed that, since the first hours after the torrential rains, the municipality has mobilized equipment on the ground to restore normality and guarantee the functioning of essential services.

Among the ongoing interventions, he listed the reconstruction of nearby paths in the areas of Cantada, Mafafa, Coruja and Mato Dentro, as well as rehabilitation works in various children’s gardens, including those of Ribeireta, Chã de Horta, Pedra Cumprido, Pedra Barro and Pilão Cão.

The municipality is also recovering sports plaques and intervening in infrastructure damaged by the rain, such as the fencing of the Municipal Stadium, which was partially destroyed after a landslide registered on Sunday morning, which also caused damage to coastal areas, namely, Calhetona and Veneza beaches.

According to the mayor, the Government has already declared a state of emergency and assessments of the damage to communities, the road network, public buildings, and homes are complete, as well as assessments of totally destroyed houses, whose families will begin receiving assistance in the coming days.

Fernandes highlighted that there are cases where reconstruction will require technical studies and the mobilization of substantial resources, given the need to ensure more resilient and sustainable infrastructure in the context of extreme phenomena associated with climate change.

“What is happening in São Miguel affects the entire community. Let’s rebuild the municipality with more strength and firmness,” he declared.

The region of Santiago North was heavily affected by torrential rains on November 13th and 14th, which caused landslides, flooding, and extensive damage in several municipalities, including São Miguel.

With intense precipitation, we compromised roads, housing and agricultural structures, leading the government to declare a state of public calamity to allow a more rapid and coordinated intervention.
