São Nicolau Kicks Off UN 80th Anniversary Celebrations

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The island of São Nicolau will host the start of the United Nations Week celebrations in Cape Verde today, the 21st, and Wednesday, the 22nd, under the motto “We are better together.”

According to a note sent to Inforpress, the event marks three historical milestones: the 80th anniversary of the UN, the 50th anniversary of Cape Verde’s independence, and the 50th anniversary of the United Nations presence in the country.

The celebrations are being held in partnership with the municipal councils of Tarrafal and Ribeira Brava and aim to reinforce the central message of the United Nations on its eightieth anniversary: to renew hope, strengthen cooperation, and act together for a more peaceful, just, and sustainable future.

The first day, on Tuesday, in the city of Tarrafal, is dedicated to institutional meetings and a community dialogue with young people, students, local associations, and international partners, focusing on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UN initiatives on the island.

The program also includes the unveiling of the SDG Artistic Mural, a work by artist Janilson Faria that celebrates youth, creativity, and the cultural identity of São Nicolau, transforming art into a tool for raising awareness for sustainable development.

The activities continue on Wednesday, the 22nd, in Ribeira Brava, with new community meetings and dialogues, a youth talent fair, and the presentation of projects supported by the United Nations, highlighting the impact and diversity of the organization’s actions in Cape Verde.

“It is important to kick off the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations on the islands, close to the people. The results of our work must be reflected in the improvement of the quality of life of the population, wherever they are. Discussing the SDGs in every corner of this beautiful archipelago is essential,” said Patrícia Portela de Souza, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Cape Verde.

The mission in São Nicolau will include the representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) and other representatives from the United Nations Office in Cape Verde.

United Nations Week celebrations continue in the coming days in Praia, with a program that includes thematic dialogues, sustainability initiatives, and activities aimed at celebrating the impact and contribution of the United Nations to the country’s development.
