Africa-Press – Cape verde. From this Monday onwards, the island of São Vicente has the first public electrical charging station, which is part of a total of ten already installed through financing from the climate fund.
The infrastructure, located on the Porto Grande pier, is the first to operate in Mindelo, within the strategy of introducing electric mobility on the island and throughout Cape Verde.
The information was provided to Inforpress by the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Energy, Alexandre Monteiro, upon witnessing the symbolic act of loading the first vehicles.
“This is the first station, but a network is planned, in this first phase, of ten charging stations in São Vicente, integrated within a program of 40 stations at national level”, explained the government official, adding that there are other private charging stations that are moving forward.
These investments, which he considered, prove the increase in consumer confidence in relation to the acquisition of electric vehicles, reflected in the trend.
“Today we already have more than 300 electric vehicles circulating in the country and, above all, we also want it to be a gradual and progressive process of introduction and, therefore, this monitoring of vehicle entries, infrastructure development”, he maintained Alexandre Monteiro, for whom “everything is going as planned”.
Projects in this area, according to the same source, bring gains in terms of urban mobility that are “healthier, better for the environment and also with less cost in terms of energy”.
The installation and management of stations in São Vicente, as well as throughout the national territory, is being carried out by the company Trações Cabo Verde, winner of the competition launched to manage this public network.
But, according to Minister Alexandre Monteiro, it is “a free and open process” in which people can install their private and charging stations “without any problems”.
The financing for the Electric Mobility Promotion Program in Cape Verde (Promec) is part of a global package of seven million euros, through an international climate fund, Mitigation Action Facility.
Promec, explained Minister Alexandre Monteiro, includes several components, from incentives for the acquisition of vehicles, development of infrastructures and training of professionals in the area.
