Africa-Press – Cape verde. According to ambassador Indra McCormick, who visited the center, in the Ribeira de Craquinha area, this morning, the idea of supporting the institution is part of her country’s objectives of encouraging other countries to “migrate” to solar energy.
“Australia is a continent, an island, an island country, just like Cape Verde, and we have a lot of sun, a lot of wind, we are surrounded by the sea, just like Cape Verde, and the Australian Government has an ambition to become a superpower of renewable energy”, considered the same source, referring to the fact that Australia has “more solar energy on rooftops per residence than any other country in the world”.
In this sense, he asserted, the “Use of sustainable solar energy” project will benefit the community and reduce energy costs, at the same time contributing to energy sustainability, “one of the main objectives” of the Government of Cape Verde.
Therefore, Indra McCormick confirmed that it was with “great honor” that she saw the concrete results of the Australian government’s support, not only in the center, but also in other areas in Cape Verde, complemented by the “productive meetings” held with Cape Verdean governments..
For his part, the president of the Centro Sócio-educativo Novos Amigos, José Lopes, was also satisfied with the project budgeted at around 13 thousand euros, of which eight were financed by Australia, and the rest by a partnership between the center , the Municipal Council of São Vicente and the Ministry of Family of Cape Verde.
“It is a project that will, in a certain way, promote the center’s energy transition, which will also guarantee us energy autonomy, in the sense of having freedom and having more activities during the academic year”, explained the person in charge, highlighting which due to electricity costs restricted some activities, especially at night.
The center, he explained, has had an energy expenditure of around 18-21 thousand escudos per month, and hence the decision to present the project to Australia.
Now, with its implementation, “Novos Amigos” will be able to have “more value” and become an environmentally friendly center and, at the same time, “transmit knowledge to children, to families, about the importance of transition energy”.
José Lopes assured that a competition has already been held, won by the company ProSol and that it already has all the equipment in São Vicente to begin assembly soon.
According to the same source, ten ‘smart’ solar panels will be introduced, with four batteries, with storage capacity, and the surplus production will have to be negotiated with the public company Electra to be converted into water consumption.
