Africa-Press – Cape verde. Humberto Évora, a sports medicine specialist, drew attention this Thursday in Mindelo to the need for measures to be taken so that sports medicine in the country ceases to be an “embryo” and begins to be viewed with different eyes.
Humberto Évora, who was also the doctor for the national football team, issued the warning as a partner of the international beach volleyball circuit (Volleyball World Beach Tour), which began yesterday, the 11th, at Praia da Laginha, and will continue until Sunday, the 14th.
The clinician, who received the invitation from the mentor of the initiative, Amílcar Graça, also known as Micau d’Laginha, praised the projection that Cape Verde can have by hosting such an international event.
Meanwhile, he stressed that support for Cape Verdean athletes is “fundamental,” considering that sports medicine is still “in its infancy in Cape Verde” and has nothing to do with the level it has reached internationally.
Humberto Évora said that the effects of this situation can be seen in the beach volleyball competition itself, where the medical team treated its first patients/athletes on Thursday, and most of them are from Cape Verde.
The same source pointed to the affinity with fellow countrymen as one of the reasons, but, on the other hand, indicated that Cape Verdean athletes appeared with knee, ankle, and shoulder injuries, and lower back pain, which are not recent.
“Our role would be to treat injuries acquired here, but now we have to ‘patch up,’ because there’s no way to change them, so we have to patch them up so that they can play,” he emphasized.
In this sense, Humberto Évora issued a warning that sports medicine in the country should be viewed differently and with a projection that “until “Now is not commensurate with the importance this has.”
According to the same source, this will require starting from the ground up, training doctors and opening centers focused on this, since “the athlete’s health always comes first.”
This position is also defended by the Secretary of Health of São Vicente, Elísio Silva, who, as he announced to the press, should occupy the position until Friday the 13th.
Elísio Silva, who highlighted his contribution to sports over the years, guaranteed that now that he is leaving his position as delegate, he will dedicate more time to sports medicine, which “has not developed at all in Cape Verde.”
“We must take much more advantage of Dr. Humberto Évora to help us, as soon as possible, to train capable doctors,” advised Elísio Silva.
This is because, according to the same source, many young people starting in sports suffer injuries that are not treated, compromising their development.
All this can lead, he added, for example, to an athlete who could be a promising talent having their career prematurely ended.
