Africa-Press – Cape verde. Today, the 13th, the 3rd edition of the Annual Youth Forum of West Africa and the Sahel took place in the city of Mindelo, São Vicente. The initiative brings together young people from across the region with the aim of empowering them as key actors in promoting peace and security in the region. The forum runs until the 15th of the current month.
In the opening speech, the Special Representative of the Secretary General Léonardo Santos Simão emphasized the need to integrate young people “in decision-making mechanisms at local, national and international level”.
Among the objectives of the Annual Youth Forum are also the formulation of recommended, relevant and innovative solutions, led by young people, to make conflict prevention more effective in maintaining peace and security in the region.
A space for deep discussions
The event, which Cape Verde is hosting for the first time, is organized by the United Nations Agency for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) and ECOWAS and aims to be a space for in-depth discussions on issues related to youth unemployment, the condition of educational systems, good practices, existing opportunities and the negative effects of social networks on education and employment.
The Annual Youth Forum will bring together government entities, young women and men from West Africa and the Sahel, youth associations, organizations and networks, youth-led organizations, regional organizations, UN entities and other technical and financial partners.
