Africa-Press – Cape verde. Hundreds of people from Mindelo occupied Avenida Marginal today, in the city of Mindelo, holding up posters and chanting slogans about “more policing, more justice and respect for the rights” of citizens.
At the heart of this human chain, which gathered at around 11 am in Praça Dom Luís and then spread along Avenida Marginal, is the “feeling of insecurity” and, according to the organization, the fight against violence and the demand for “more security” for São Vicente.
Along the route, in addition to the slogans, the posters that the protesters held up read “We want security!”, “Enough violence!”, “Justice that works!” and “Police presence now!”, among many others.
Among those present, David Leite considered that the initiative follows on from other actions carried out with the “patriotic instinct” of the people who “want a more serene, more peaceful São Vicente where people live normally”.
“For tourists to walk around freely and for us to lie down in our beds without worrying that thieves are going to come in and rob us,” said David Leite, for whom the biggest problem is not crime, but impunity.
An opinion shared by another participant, who considered that there is currently “a lot of shamelessness” on the part of the criminals because they are aware that justice is not being applied.
Representing the Sokols 2017 movement, which encouraged the creation of the human chain, Salvador Mascarenhas welcomed the “good turnout” that was already expected.
“But now the most important thing is not to stop here and to continue this work. We have a hard core and we have to continue this pressure, pass on this message and create these human chains, because things in São Vicente have to change,” he said.
Referring to situations of robberies and drug trafficking, Salvador Mascarenhas believes it is necessary to have a “tough hand” on these issues and change legislation wherever necessary.
Now, as the next step, the movement plans to meet with authorities to look at solutions and invest in “proactive and preventive action”.
