Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Cape Verdean Music Society today congratulated the institution of February 1st as National Day of Talaia Baxu, voted unanimously, on March 28th, in the National Assembly. Talaia Baxu is a traditional Cape Verdean musical genre, originating from the island of Fogo.

“The Cape Verdean Music Society, being the identity that defends several artists, authors, composers and performers, who compose, sing and play Talaia Baxu, recognizes the importance of this Cape Verdean musical genre for the preservation and appreciation of the identity and of Cape Verdean culture and toasts the National Day of Talaia Baxu with Cape Verde and with all those who are part of the family of this musical genre in the country and in the diaspora”, he declared, in a note sent to the press.

The institution of the National Day aims to recognize Talaia Baxu as one of the musical, artistic and cultural genres of reference in Cape Verde and create the necessary conditions for it to be consecrated as a national intangible heritage, as justified by the Ministry of Culture and Creative Industries. .

The date also serves to “honor the men and women who lent their whole class”, to draw attention to the need to continue composing, interpreting and valuing “Talaia Baxu”, to promote this musical art in all sectors of the world. civil society and its internationalization, promote the different musical styles of “Talaia Baxu” and apply UNESCO’s ideals, which translate into peace, friendship and unity between people, through “Talaia Baxu”.

The 1st of February was chosen because it was the birth date of Adelina Gomes, popularly known as Bina Manzinha, one of the singers of “Talaia Baxu”.

Talaia Baxu, according to SCM, originated in the mid-19th century. XIX, on the slopes of the Volcano of Ilha do Fogo. Its lyrics represented the lamentations, misfortunes and losses resulting from volcanic eruptions.

“Today, the lyrics also reflect other experiences of the people, in more modern compositions, although they continue to essentially portray the experiences of the island of Fogo, and tune into the less happy and difficult moments”, he underlined.
