Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Internal Administration (MAI), Paulo Rocha, assured this Wednesday, the 20th, that efforts are being made to locate those missing on the island of São Vicente following the storm of August 11th.
Paulo Rocha made this assurance on the sidelines of a visit this morning to the water intake station in João Ribeiro, São Vicente, where he warned of the dangers posed by new construction in high-risk areas.
The minister confirmed that two women remain missing, but assured that searches, led by the Coast Guard with the support of the Portuguese Navy, continue in all areas, with special attention to maritime areas. “We will not stop. We will continue as long as our energy allows,” he stated.
Regarding the construction on the hillsides, the Minister of Internal Administration highlighted the work being done by the National Civil Protection and Fire Service (SNPCB) in marking the high-risk areas, as well as in the eviction and accommodation of affected families.
Paulo Rocha also reinforced the call for the population to avoid rebuilding in the same locations, “a practice that increases risks and increases vulnerability.”
The Ministry of Internal Affairs made a special appeal to the entities and citizens involved in mobilizing support to promote better coordination, especially with Civil Protection and the City of São Vicente, to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected communities.
Regarding the drainage of the water, the Minister of Internal Administration reiterated his commitment to the ongoing efforts, reporting that, as of this morning, the equipment at the pumping station in “Caisim,” Mindelo, had already been restored.
“Currently, power is being directed to the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to enable pumping and repair of the damaged equipment,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, water trucks continue to work on unclogging sewer tanks on various streets throughout the city. “It’s a huge undertaking, so we want to thank everyone who is committed to this work,” he emphasized.
