Africa-Press – Cape verde. The administrator of the Public Supply Service of the Municipality of Praia (SEPAMP), José Carlos Moniz, revealed that the Sucupira market, one of the largest shopping centres in the country, is the target of several attempted robberies every day, but he guarantees that there is sufficient security to guarantee the protection of the space and the traders.
“We know that Sucupira is the largest market in the country, it attracts unwanted people, it attracts some pirates and thieves to the market and they make several attempts. We have failed attempts every day, five, six, seven, ten failed robbery attempts”, he stated.
Despite the high frequency of attempts, the manager stresses that there is sufficient security to guarantee the protection of the space and the traders.
“We have security. SEPAMP has around 60 security guards. If there is any failure, an investigation must be carried out, responsibilities must be determined”, said Moniz.
As he explained, any successful case falls under the jurisdiction of the National Police.
“Sometimes the attempts are successful, as happened recently. When this happens, it is the responsibility of the police and we can say little until the police decide, because they themselves recommend this so that we don’t talk too much about the intricacies that are taking place”, he explained.
The market administration guarantees that it is working with the authorities to increase security and minimize the risks for traders and customers who frequent the place daily.
“But, it is an administrative and police matter and we cannot go into too much detail”, he concluded.
The Sucupira market is known for its large movement of sellers and buyers, being one of the central points of informal trade in the capital.
Last week, in statements to public television, a trader from that market reported that he was the target of a robbery last weekend at the Sucupira market.
In total, the silver seller says he lost around 7 thousand contos and blamed the SEPAMP guards for what happened.
The seller was joined by several other traders who also claim to have experienced the same problem.
