Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the National Teachers’ Union (Sindep), Jorge Cardoso, today defended the urgent need for public policies that guarantee the appreciation of public schools and the promotion of equal opportunities in the education system.
The union leader was speaking to Inforpress, on the sidelines of the VI Ordinary Conference of Sindep, held today in Cidade Velha.
On that occasion, Jorge Cardoso emphasized the importance of quality public education as the basis for building a just and egalitarian society.
“Currently, and especially policymakers, their children practically don’t attend public schools, while our children do. And why?” he questioned, suggesting that something is wrong within the education system itself.
He further added that this goes against the constitutional principles of equal opportunities, which, he emphasized, “guarantees equality for all.”
Furthermore, the union leader stressed that the conference’s motto reflects a cause championed worldwide by the International Federation of Education, which seeks to guarantee respect for equal opportunities in education.
“We cannot accept that the best teaching conditions are exclusive to private schools, to the detriment of public schools. This creates an unfair differentiation between students and devalues the teaching profession,” he warned.
With this, he affirmed that Sindep will fight seriously in this direction, to restore dignity, not only for the teaching profession, but for the entire educational community of Cape Verde.
