Supreme Court of Cape Verde considers salary adjustment in the Justice sector “unpostponable”

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the Cape Verdean Supreme Court of Justice (STJ), Benfeito Mosso Ramos, said today that the salary adjustment in the sector is “absolutely unpostponable”, especially for magistrates, who have not had their salary updated for around 26 years.

In his speech, in Praia, at the official opening of the judicial year, the president of the STJ asked, according to Lusa, for “ special attention ” to the remuneration status in the sector, which has worsened with the low generation of revenue, particularly with legal costs .

“ I think that the salary adjustment for Justice employees, especially magistrates, who, it’s hard to believe, have not seen their salary updated for around 26 years, almost an entire professional life without knowing any salary increase, is absolutely unpostponable. ” , lamented Benfeito Mosso Ramos.

Questioned at the end of the ceremony, the Minister of Justice, Joana Rosa, said that she recognizes the issue of the lack of salary increases in the sector, which has been going on since 1997, guaranteeing that, soon, a new statute for magistrates will be brought to parliament.

“ We are going to provide answers, not 100%, because the demands are enormous, we have a framework from a budgetary point of view, we have to respect it, but we are restructuring careers and there will be, with the implementation of the 100 index [of the career salary scale of general and special regime for the Public Service], substantial salary improvements for magistrates ”, predicted according to Lusa.

For court officials, the minister noted that changes to their statutes are also underway.

“We are working so that we can also look at the issue of reducing fees, we are going to work towards improving the salary scale to motivate all judicial operators so that we can also have good results”, the government official committed .

According to the source of this newspaper, the act that marks the official opening of the judicial year was presided over by the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, and was attended by the highest authorities in the sector in the country, deputies, diplomatic corps, magistrates, lawyers and representatives of civil society.
