Tennis Club: US Embassy says negotiations for land purchase were made with transparency

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The ambassador of the United States of America, in Cape Verde, said today, in the city of Praia, that the negotiation for the purchase/sale of land for the construction of the new embassy, despite being “complex”, was carried out with “transparency”. .

Jeff Daigle gave this clarification in statements to the press, when asked about how he sees the conflict arising from the demolition of the Várzea tennis court and the demonstrations it has generated.

“We are not aware of any agreement between the Municipality of Praia and the Tennis Club. When we bought the land, we were not aware of any agreement between the two parties”, he said, stressing that any complaints must be discussed between the two institutions, since the embassy is not part of this agreement.

Asked by journalists about this controversy, the mayor of Praia, Francisco Carvalho, replied that, in the governance of public affairs, “conflict and consensus go hand in hand”.

“It is a very normal situation, as it is a situation of city governance that belongs to everyone”, he asserted, stressing, however, that the situation we are experiencing today will have a way out so that it will be remembered 500 years from now. .

Serenity

The mayor of Praia also said that the city council will issue a communiqué with all serenity, to put an end to the sense of state that the situation requires.

The demolition of the Tennis Club on the Beach took place on the 5th of April.

With the transfer of land from the Tennis Club for the construction of the US Embassy, there is a contract for the construction of new facilities for the club in the Palmarejo area, signed by the previous executive led by Óscar Santos.

The same document, according to the club’s chairman, António Pedro Borges, “established that no action would be taken on its premises before the construction and delivery of new fully equipped courts to the club”.

In 2019, the City Council of Praia had promised to provide the city with a new Tennis Club facility, with four courts for the practice of the sport and installation of support, so that the capital could take a “huge leap” in the sport.

The project, according to the then mayor, Óscar Santos, was “practically concluded”, with only the launch of the public tender so that the fields could start in late January and early February between the districts of Cidadela and Palmarejo.
